What Can Osteopathy do for you?
rehabilitation. For post fracture or post operation
Now sadly rarely offered. After any major surgery, if there has been a general anaesthetic, post op rehab is beneficial and will not only speed up recovery but can also deal with complications of the effects of surgery. Sometimes just being in bed too long can upset neck or back. The position/ manoeuvres done whilst 'out' can cause spinal problems or upset existing troubles. Nearly always simple rehab exercises need to be done to build up weak muscle or stretch shortened tissue/ adhesions that occur as a result of surgery. Osteopaths can and do carry out this work but tailored to your specific needs. I now see many patients after successful knee and hip surgery for basic rehab treatments.
After injury especially post fracture the body needs help to return to normal function. This is often very simple massage/manipulation that in no way upsets the healing process but allows the body to return to full function.
A 76 year old lady came to see me having fallen off her bike and fractured her wrist. When she came out of plaster she did have physio (unusual these days). But they insisted she push exercises to the point of causing her increased pain. The movement did not improve so she stopped treatment.
I saw her 3 months after the accident and she had so little extension at the wrist she could not hold onto the bowl when trying to play bowls her great passion since her husband died. Five simple treatments later in only 6 weeks she had full and near normal movement back in her wrist and no pain. She was delighted but also annoyed that she had wasted 3 months.
